Guangzhou Chest Hospital was established in 1953 and is a public welfare institution of category two under the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission. It also bears the names of 'Affiliated Institute of Tuberculosis Prevention and Control, Guangzhou Medical University' and 'Guangzhou Institute of Tuberculosis Prevention and Control.' The hospital is a state-owned tertiary comprehensive medical institution with specialized expertise in chest and lung diseases and tuberculosis, integrating medical care, education, research, and prevention. Located at the foot of the beautiful Baiyun Mountain and beside the lush Luhu Lake, the hospital enjoys a scenic environment and is situated within the 'Guangzhou Garden' medical zone. With strong technical capabilities, a well-established service system, advanced medical skills, and modern equipment, it serves as a central hub for prevention, treatment, monitoring, training, and research of chest and lung diseases in the Guangzhou region. It is a principal investigator (PI) unit of the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases. The hospital functions as a teaching base for multiple higher medical institutions, including Sun Yat-sen University, Southern Medical University, and Guangzhou Medical University, and hosts the Institute of Lung Disease Research. It also operates the Guangdong Provincial Doctoral Workstation, the Guangzhou Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base, and a joint doctoral training base with the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, fostering a rich academic atmosphere and solid platform foundation. Additionally, the hospital leads the implementation of tuberculosis control programs in Guangzhou, providing guidance on operations, quality control, supervision, and training for district-level tuberculosis prevention organizations throughout the city, earning high recognition both province-wide and nationally. The hospital has a complete range of medical departments, including the Department of Tuberculosis and various sub-specialties, Intensive Care Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Neurology, Gastroenterology, and General Internal Medicine. The Department of Tuberculosis is a key clinical specialty in Guangdong Province and has ranked among the top five nationwide for four consecutive years in the Fudan University specialty reputation ranking. The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Lung Diseases is a key clinical specialty in TCM in Guangdong Province; Tuberculosis is a key medical discipline in Guangzhou City; Neurological Tuberculosis has been selected as part of the Guangzhou Municipal Major Difficult and Rare Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center Project (2025–2029). The hospital is equipped with a large number of advanced, high-end medical devices, including ECMO, MRI, CT, fiberoptic bronchoscope, thoracoscope, and fully automated immunochemistry and biochemical testing lines. The hospital leads the establishment of the South China Tuberculosis Specialty Alliance, the Guangzhou Anti-Tuberculosis Association, and the 'Medical Care, Health, and Rehabilitation' Medical Consortium. It is one of the first national pilot units for the expanded implementation of new anti-tuberculosis drugs and their protection program, a national demonstration center for tuberculosis nutritional management, an important member of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Consortium, and has been included in the Guangdong Provincial Translational Medicine Innovation Platform Project under the theme of 'Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment and Prevention of Tuberculosis'. The hospital currently has approximately 1,100 staff members, including over 860 professional technicians and more than 300 professionals holding senior technical titles or master’s and doctoral degrees. It has received numerous collective honors, including National Advanced Unit in the Fight against SARS, Advanced Units at provincial and municipal levels, Civilized Unit at the municipal level, Advanced Collective in the Fight against COVID-19, and Advanced Grassroots Party Organization at the municipal level.
