Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Third Hospital (also known as 'Rouji Hospital,' formerly 'Guangzhou No. 2 People's Hospital') was established in 1899 and is China's first hospital affiliated with a women's Western medical school. With a history of 126 years, it was personally inspected by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, then Premier, in 1912. As one of the pioneering centers for obstetrics and gynecology, the hospital has nurtured renowned medical figures such as Professor Liang Yiwen, known as one of the 'Southern Liang, Northern Lin,' laying the foundation for the hospital's century-old motto: 'Compassionate Heart for Healing, Pursuit of Excellence in Medicine.' Today, it is a large tertiary A-level comprehensive hospital integrating medical care, teaching, and research, having developed a 'one hospital, four campuses' structure: Lichwan Campus (headquarters), Huangpu Campus, Baiyun Branch (Baiyun District Maternal and Child Health Hospital), and Yuexi Hospital (Dianbai District Maternal and Child Health Hospital). The hospital adheres to integrated development in medical care, education, and research. Its obstetrics and gynecology programs are nationally recognized. In recent years, it has received national honors including 'National Advanced Unit in the Health System' and the 'National May 1 Labor Medal.' It continues to lead regional medical innovation and service improvement. With strong overall capabilities, the hospital excels particularly in obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics. The Department of Obstetrics is a National Key Clinical Specialty, a National Key Specialty for Perinatal Care, the Guangdong Provincial Center for Clinical Quality Control in Obstetrics, the provincial guidance center for special technical services in prenatal diagnosis, and a provincial center for critical neonatal rescue. In 1998, it became the first institution in China to establish the Guangzhou Center for Critical Maternal Care, admitting over 1,000 critically ill pregnant women annually with a survival rate exceeding 99%, serving patients across Guangdong Province and neighboring provinces. The Department of Reproductive Medicine achieved the first and second IVF births in Guangdong Province in 1989 and became the third institution in China to successfully perform IVF. The Neonatology Department once successfully rescued a preterm infant weighing only 385 grams—the lowest birth weight recorded in Guangdong Province. As one of Guangzhou’s first research-oriented hospitals, it hosts the Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Guangzhou Institute of Clinical Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Women’s and Children’s Diseases, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory for Major Obstetric Diseases, and multiple other provincial and municipal key laboratories and research centers, along with one academician workstation. Over the past five years, it has secured more than 500 projects funded by major national initiatives such as the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation. In 2023, the hospital ranked 13th nationwide and first in Guangdong Province in the 'Scientific and Technological Metrics' ranking for obstetrics and gynecology. The hospital is the Third Clinical College of Guangzhou Medical University, relying on a directly affiliated teaching hospital of a 'Double First-Class' medical university, undertaking undergraduate, master's, and doctoral medical education. Clinical Medicine is a first-level discipline doctoral and master's degree program, a national characteristic specialty construction point, and a provincial brand major. It currently has 145 master's thesis supervisors and 66 doctoral thesis supervisors, with faculty including 'National Outstanding Teachers' and 'National Excellent Resident Training Instructors.'
