Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Third Hospital was established on December 12, 1899, originally named Ruoji Hospital. It is China's first hospital affiliated with a women's Western medicine school and one of the earliest Western medical hospitals in the country. Located in the bustling Xiguan district of Guangzhou, it lies adjacent to the scenic Lianhu Lake. In 1953, it was renamed Guangzhou No. 2 People's Hospital. In 2006, it became affiliated with Guangzhou Medical College, known as Guangzhou Medical College Affiliated Third Hospital. In 2013, following the university's name change, it became Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Third Hospital. It is the only large-scale Grade-3-A comprehensive hospital in Liwan District integrating medical care, teaching, and research. With a long history and strong overall capabilities, the hospital has nurtured renowned medical masters such as Dr. Liang Yiweng, a distinguished expert in obstetrics and gynecology acclaimed as one of the "Southern Liang, Northern Lin," Dr. Wang Huaile, a leading surgeon, and Professor Chen Yuanben, known as the father of the first two IVF babies in Guangdong Province. The hospital boasts prominent specialty strengths. It serves as the Guangdong Provincial Center for Clinical Quality Control in Obstetrics, the Provincial Center for Severe Maternal Rescue, the Provincial Technical Guidance Center for Prenatal Diagnosis, and the Provincial Center for Severe Neonatal Rescue. It is also a National Institution for Drug Clinical Trials and a Guangdong Provincial Judicial Forensic DNA Identification Institution. Additionally, it has been designated as a national clinical research institution for stem cells (second batch). Obstetrics is a National Key Clinical Specialty and a National Specialized Clinic for Perinatal Health Care. In 1998, it pioneered the establishment of the Guangzhou Center for Severe Maternal Rescue, becoming the most extensive network-covered and technically robust maternal rescue center in South China. It currently treats over 1,500 severe maternal cases annually, achieving a rescue success rate of 98.7%, and successfully performed China’s first uterine-sparing hysterectomy in 2016. Gynecology is a Municipal High-Level Clinical Key Specialty. The hospital has established centers for minimally invasive gynecological diagnosis and treatment, hysteroscopic diagnosis and treatment, and cervical lesion management. In 2018, its single-port laparoscopic surgery won a global gold award. The Department of Reproductive Medicine gave birth to Guangdong Province's first and second IVF babies in 1989, making it the third institution in China to achieve successful IVF births. It is one of the country’s earliest institutions approved by the National Health Commission for human assisted reproductive technology. The department has been authorized to perform preimplantation genetic testing (PGT, commonly known as third-generation IVF). It is among the largest, most experienced, and highest-success-rate reproductive medicine centers in the province, with the highest number of treatment cycles completed in Guangdong over the past five years and ranking among the top nationally. In 2020, the reproductive urology team achieved a world-first success in repairing penile corpus cavernosum defects in rabbits using stem cells combined with 3D printing technology. Currently, Clinical Medicine and General Medicine are key disciplines in Guangdong Province; Neonatology is a provincial clinical key specialty and a distinctive specialty in neonatal health care, having successfully rescued a critically premature infant weighing only 465 grams—the lowest weight recorded in Guangzhou. Clinical Nursing is a provincial clinical key specialty; Reproductive Medicine and Gynecology are municipal key disciplines in Guangzhou; Gynecology, Reproductive Health and Infertility are high-level clinical key specialties in Guangzhou; Geriatrics is a pilot project for municipal traditional Chinese medicine characteristic specialties; Spine Surgery has introduced innovative minimally invasive techniques such as extreme lateral lumbar interbody fusion (XLIF); Joint Surgery has performed China’s first 3D-printed ankle implant surgery and the first AI-assisted preoperative planning total knee replacement surgery in the country. Departments including Organ Transplantation, Cardiovascular Medicine, Neurology, Respiratory Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Traditional Chinese Medicine enjoy strong reputations within Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City. Endoscopy, laparoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, and image-guided intervention techniques are hallmark features of the hospital. The hospital hosts several national-level emergency centers, including the "National Chest Pain Center" and "National Advanced Stroke Center," which are responsible for rapid emergency care of critically ill patients in the region. It is among the first batch of nationally recognized stroke center alliance hospitals and the first group of Guangzhou stroke emergency map hospitals. Additionally, it has received recognition as a Model Base for Guangdong Province Chest Pain Centers, a National Atrial Fibrillation Center Construction Unit, a Guangdong Provincial Training Base for Cardiovascular Interventional Techniques, a National Demonstration Unit for Cardiac Rehabilitation, and a National Demonstration Unit for Hypertension Control. The hospital boasts a high-level medical scientific research platform. Established in 1989, the Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed three major research directions: critical maternal care and perinatal medicine, reproductive and genetic medicine, and gynecologic oncology. Currently, the hospital hosts the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Major Obstetric Diseases, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine (co-built with the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University), the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics in Universities, the Guangdong Provincial Center for Maternal-Fetal Medical Engineering Technology, the Guangdong "2011" Collaborative Innovation Center, the Guangzhou Municipal Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics, the Guangzhou Medical University DAMP Research Center, three high-level joint innovation laboratories, one academician workstation, a gynecologic oncology laboratory, and a biobank. In 2017, the Guangzhou Medical University Center for Regenerative Medicine and 3D Printing Translation Research was established, now recognized as the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering in Ordinary Institutions of Higher Education, the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Platform of the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, and the South China Branch of the National Engineering Research Center for Tissue Engineering. Over the past five years, the hospital has secured more than 500 research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and major provincial science and technology programs. It launched the *Chinese Journal of Obstetric Emergency Medicine (Electronic Edition)*, published over 1,400 scientific papers, including more than 500 indexed in SCI. Groundbreaking research has been published in top international medical journals such as *The Lancet*, *Cell*, and *Cell Stem Cell*. The hospital ranked among the top 100 institutions in the Nature Index in both 2017 and 2018. As the Third Clinical College and directly affiliated teaching hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the hospital upholds the educational philosophy of "integrity and skill combined, integration of medicine and humanities, student-centered learning." It comprises 22 teaching departments, responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and international student education. Clinical Medicine is a first-level discipline doctoral and master’s degree program, designated as a national key specialty construction point and a provincial brand program. The hospital has over 120 doctoral and master’s thesis supervisors, including recipients of national, provincial (Nanyue), and municipal awards for outstanding teachers. A practical training base centered on the Third Clinical College has been established. General Medicine is a key distinctive discipline in Guangdong Province, and Clinical Medicine is a top-tier key discipline under the "Peak Discipline" program in Guangdong. Internal Medicine is a national model course and a bilingual teaching demonstration course. The hospital is a National Base for Standardized Training of Resident Physicians. In 2008, it became a collaborating institution of the American CMB Reform Project for Resident Physician Training. It currently hosts 20 standardized training bases for resident physicians, as well as a specialized training base for perinatal medicine in newborns. A clinical skills center covering 1,860 square meters has been established, equipped with comprehensive simulation medical teaching devices. The school features humanistic medical education rooted in its century-old cultural heritage, and leverages Internet Plus technology to become the first university in Guangdong to independently develop a cloud-based E-Second Classroom Comprehensive Evaluation System. Over the years, it has trained and supplied numerous outstanding medical professionals to healthcare institutions. The hospital operates two campuses: the Duobao Road campus in Liwan District, and the Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Women and Children's Hospital, soon to open in Huangpu District under its management. The main hospital has a total of 1,000 designated beds, with 48 clinical departments and 10 medical technology departments. With over 2,000 staff members, including more than 300 holding senior professional titles, the hospital serves over 2 million outpatient and emergency visits annually and discharges over 45,000 patients each year.
