Southern Medical University Southern Hospital is a large-scale, comprehensive tertiary A-class hospital integrating medical care, teaching, research, and preventive health services, recognized as one of China’s top 100 hospitals. It serves as the first affiliated hospital and the first clinical college of Southern Medical University (formerly the First Military Medical University). Founded in 1941, the hospital was transferred from military to provincial administration in August 2004. Its national ranking remains stable around No. 15 in authoritative domestic rankings, with 15 specialties listed among the top ten or nominated in the China Best Specialty Rankings (Fudan version). It is a National (Trauma) Regional Medical Center, a key construction unit under Guangdong Province’s High-Level Hospital "Climbing Plan," and a National Regional Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Rheumatology). The hospital currently operates its main campus, Zengcheng Branch, Zhishicheng Campus, Baiyun Branch, Jianggao Campus, and Tahe Branch. The main campus is located at the foot of Baiyun Mountain, QiLin Hill, featuring a garden-style campus in Guangdong Province, previously honored as one of the "Top 400 National Departmental Afforestation Units." The current site covers 203,000 square meters with a building area of 458,000 square meters. It has 3,601 open beds and medical equipment valued at nearly 1.4 billion yuan. In 2018, outpatient and emergency visits reached 3.2546 million, and annual discharge numbers were 119,000. The Zengcheng Branch, located in the nationally designated Zengcheng Economic and Technological Development Zone in eastern Guangzhou, has officially opened, with a planned capacity of 1,500 beds, aiming to become a smart, tertiary A-class hospital with intelligent processes, refined management, and high-quality services. The Jianggao Campus, situated in northwest Guangzhou, traces its history back to the Puhui Hospital founded by New Zealand missionaries at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Its architecture blends Eastern and Western styles, set in a beautiful environment and recognized as a cultural heritage site in Guangzhou. It currently has 360 beds and offers departments including Geriatrics, Interventional Medicine, Psychiatry and Psychology, and Health Management.
