The Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (Sun Yat-sen University Tumor Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Research Institute) was established in March 1964 and is one of the four earliest cancer hospitals founded after the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The center is one of the largest and most academically powerful integrated institutions in oncology nationwide, combining medical care, teaching, research, and prevention. It bears the national responsibility for cancer control and plays a leading role in cancer prevention and treatment across China, especially in South China and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions. Its academic standing and overall strength rank among the top nationally. The Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is a State Key Discipline (Oncology), a State Key Laboratory (State Key Laboratory of Cancer Biology in South China), a Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, a National Clinical Trial Center for New Drugs (Anticancer Drugs), and a Provincial-Ministerial Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center for Oncology Medicine; it serves as the host institution for the Guangdong Provincial Cancer Center and the Guangdong Esophageal Cancer Research Institute. It publishes the English-language academic journal Cancer Communications (Journal of Cancer), which has been selected multiple times as one of the "Hundred Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals" and the "Most International Impactful Academic Journals in China." It was indexed by SCI in 2014, with a current impact factor of 10.392 (JCR 2020). In the JCR classification for oncology, it ranks in Q1, making it a leading journal in oncology within China. The center attracts and gathers talented professionals through its outstanding culture, assembling a high-level team in medical care, education, and research. It currently has 254 master’s degree supervisors and 166 doctoral degree supervisors; it includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 10 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund. The center currently operates two campuses—Yuexiu and Huangpu—with a total of 2,118 actual inpatient beds (1,490 at the Yuexiu campus and 628 at the Huangpu campus). It serves over 1.18 million outpatient and emergency visits annually and admits approximately 130,000 inpatients per year, placing its medical workload among the top in national specialized cancer hospitals. The center maintains advanced medical technology, featuring an Asia-leading radiation therapy facility with state-of-the-art hardware and software, and performs multiple robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgeries across specialties. In 1998, it pioneered the nation's first single-disease chief expert system for cancer care, organizing multidisciplinary treatment plans for major cancer types. In the past five years, more than 60 research outcomes originating from clinical practice have gained international recognition and been incorporated into global cancer treatment standards and guidelines. The center provides personalized, high-quality medical care to cancer patients worldwide. As one of China’s leading institutions for training high-level oncology professionals, the center has cultivated numerous outstanding cancer specialists nationwide, particularly in Guangdong Province. Since 1964, it has hosted national clinical oncology training programs commissioned by the Ministry of Health, training over 5,000 oncology professionals across China, many of whom have become academic leaders and key personnel in their respective regions. It has also served as editor-in-chief for nationally recognized planning textbooks in oncology—Clinical Oncology and Oncology. Since 1990, the center has explored standardized residency training for specialty hospital physicians and remains one of the few established training bases in Guangdong Province. Since being approved as a national first batch of residency training bases in September 2014, it now hosts 10 nationally accredited residency training programs, producing high-caliber, uniformly trained medical professionals for society.
