I. Long-standing History Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University), is a hospital under the direct administration of the National Health Commission. Established in 1835, it is China’s first Western-style hospital and has now celebrated 185 years of history. The great revolutionary pioneer Dr. Sun Yat-sen once studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary activities here under the name "Yixian." The hospital has pioneered countless milestones in China's Western medicine history, including: the first eye surgery, ovarian removal surgery, bladder stone extraction, ether anesthesia, pathological autopsy, the first X-ray image in China, the first Chinese medical journal, the first Western medical school in China, the first Chinese student to study medicine abroad, and the first "Florence Nightingale" in China. After liberation, numerous renowned medical experts and educators across China—such as Lin Shumou, Chen Yaozhen, Xie Zhiguang, Zhong Shifan, Qin Guangyu, Chen Xintao, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenshu, and Chen Guozhen—came here to work, nurturing a large number of medical talents. It has become a cradle for Western medicine in China, the origin of Sun Yat-sen University’s medical education, and has made significant contributions to medical development throughout Guangdong Province and the entire country. II. Rapid Development With a century-long legacy, the hospital has evolved into a large, comprehensive, tertiary-A-level institution integrating medical care, teaching, research, and preventive healthcare. Currently, the hospital operates two campuses and one outpatient department—the North Campus, South Campus, and the South Campus Outpatient Department—while the Huadu Campus and Shenzhen-Shanwei Campus are under construction and expected to open in 2021. The hospital employs over 4,500 staff members, including: 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 chief scientist of the 973 Program, 2 recipients of the National "Thousand People Plan," 4 National Outstanding Youth Scientists, 3 National Distinguished Young Scientists, and 6 overseas talent program entrants at the national level. There are more than 210 senior professional titles and over 342 associate senior professional titles. The hospital currently has 149 doctoral supervisors and 300 master’s degree supervisors. It also includes 31 individuals serving as chairpersons or vice-chairpersons in national academic associations and societies, and 22 provincial-level society leaders. (1) Steady Progress in Medical Services In recent years, the hospital has seen continuous growth in all medical service volumes and steadily improved operational efficiency. With over 3,000 inpatient beds, the hospital serves more than 3.02 million outpatient visits annually, performs over 85,000 surgeries, and discharges more than 115,000 inpatients each year. The hospital has five national key disciplines: Internal Medicine (Nephrology), Surgery (General Surgery), Neurology, Oncology, and Otorhinolaryngology. It also boasts nine national clinical key specialties: Oncology, Endocrinology, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Epidemiology (Pediatric Hematology), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Additionally, 23 departments—including Oncology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Thoracic Surgery, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Medical Imaging, and Clinical Nursing—are recognized as Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialties. The hospital has been selected as a second-phase key construction hospital under Guangdong Province’s High-Level Hospital Program and is designated for the National Project on Enhancing Diagnostic and Treatment Capabilities for Complex Tumor Diseases. It holds qualifications for major organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, and kidney, and has established centers for precision oncology treatment and multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and consultation (including MDT consultation, complex disease consultation, and teleconsultation centers), fully demonstrating its strong clinical specialty capabilities. (II) Continuous Breakthroughs in Research and Discipline Development As a high-level hospital in Guangdong Province, aiming to become a "first-class research-oriented hospital," the institution has significantly enhanced its academic strength in recent years. It entered the global top 100 research hospitals in 2020 and has ranked among the top 10 nationwide in the "Nature Index" for four consecutive years. President Professor Song Erwei is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Centered on discipline development and driven by large platforms, teams, and projects, the hospital has seen substantial growth in academic strength and is a vital component of Sun Yat-sen University’s “Clinical Medicine” discipline, which is recognized as a world-class discipline. Research in tumor microenvironment and RNA medicine leads internationally, while clinical studies in stem cells and immune cell therapies rank among the top in China. The hospital demonstrates strong capability in securing research projects at various levels, with annual research funding exceeding 220 million RMB, consistently ranking among the top in Guangdong Province's tertiary hospitals in terms of project count and funding volume. It has secured landmark projects including the 973 Program, 863 Program, National Key R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation Innovative Research Group, and Major Projects. (3) Teaching Efforts Progress Steadily The hospital’s founding of Boji Medical Hall marked the beginning of its teaching endeavors and is recognized as China’s earliest Western medical school. Building upon a century-long tradition of teaching excellence, the hospital has developed the distinctive "Lingnan Teaching Characteristic" characterized by "the spirit of eminent figures, mentorship by distinguished teachers, and guidance by renowned experts." The hospital consistently integrates its profound historical and cultural heritage, Sun Yat-sen’s patriotic ideals, and the noble medical ethics of its predecessors into teaching activities to educate and inspire students. It firmly upholds Professor Zhou Shoukai’s established "Three Bases, Three Strictnesses" clinical medical education philosophy. The hospital annually manages and trains over 1,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 850 full-time postgraduate students, and over 500 trainees. It is one of five institutions nationwide that were among the first to launch an eight-year clinical medicine doctoral program on a large scale (100 students per year).
