Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University)

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) is a hospital under the direct administration of the National Health Commission. Established in 1835, it is China's first Western medicine hospital and the birthplace of Chinese Western medicine and Western medical education, with a history spanning 186 years. The great revolutionary pioneer Dr. Sun Yat-sen once studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary activities here under the name "Yixian." The hospital has achieved numerous firsts in China's Western medicine history, including: the first eye surgery, ovarian removal surgery, bladder stone extraction, ether anesthesia, pathological anatomy, the first X-ray image, the first Chinese medical journal, the first Western medical school, and the first Chinese student sent abroad to study medicine. After liberation, many renowned medical and medical education figures across China—such as Lin Shumou, Chen Yaozhen, Xie Zhiguang, Zhong Shifan, Qin Guangyu, Chen Xintao, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenshu, and Chen Guozhen—devoted themselves to this institution, nurturing a large number of medical talents and establishing it as a cradle for Western medicine in China, making significant contributions to the nation's medical cause. With over a century of heritage, the hospital has now evolved into a large, comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital integrating medical care, teaching, research, and preventive health services. Currently, the hospital operates three campuses and one outpatient department: the North Campus, South Campus, Shenshan Campus (Shenshan Central Hospital), and the South Campus Outpatient Department. The Huadu Campus is under construction, and the Haizhu Bay Campus is in the planning stage. The hospital currently has over 4,500 staff members, including: 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 chief scientist of the 973 Program, 2 recipients of the National Hundred Talents Plan, 5 National Outstanding Youth Scientists, 4 National Excellent Young Scientists, and 7 individuals selected under national overseas talent introduction programs. There are 210 staff members with senior professional titles and over 342 with associate senior titles. The hospital has 149 doctoral supervisors and 300 master's supervisors; it holds 31 leadership positions in national academic societies and associations, and 22 provincial-level society or association chairmanships. In recent years, the hospital's medical service volume has continued to grow, and medical operational efficiency has steadily improved. With a total of over 3,000 inpatient beds, the hospital serves more than 3.02 million outpatient visits annually, performs over 85,000 surgeries, and discharges over 115,000 patients each year. The hospital hosts seven national key disciplines: Internal Medicine (Nephrology, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases), Surgery (General Surgery), Neurology, Oncology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Ophthalmology. Nine specialties—Oncology, Endocrinology, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Endemic Disease (Pediatric Hematology), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Emergency Medicine—are designated as national clinical key specialties. Additionally, 23 departments—including Oncology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Thoracic Surgery, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Stomatology, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Medical Imaging, and Clinical Nursing—are recognized as Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialties. The hospital has been selected as one of the second batch of key construction hospitals in Guangdong Province's High-Level Hospital Initiative and is part of the National Project for Enhancing Capabilities in Diagnosing and Treating Complex Tumor Diseases. It also holds qualifications for transplantation of four major organs—heart, lung, liver, and kidney—and has established centers for precision oncology treatment and multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and consultation (including MDT consultation, complex disease consultation, and teleconsultation centers), fully demonstrating the hospital's strong clinical specialty capabilities.
